i don’t think hal has done anything to deserve being called a scumbag. i mean, the whole proposal scene was pretty tragic, but it’s not really his fault that he’s dumb. in his head, asking carol out to a nice dinner was a good precursor to asking her to do him a favor. and he would have been right except for the history that he and carol have shared. in carol’s head, asking her to a nice restaurant for dinner -after a whole universal crisis has finally ended and things are going back to normal for everyone- is a good precursor to an engagement. hal should have realized that this could possibly lead carol on, but he was being dumb. i don’t for a second he was being purposefully malicious.
